Rep. Carter Barrett Named Vice Chair of House Higher Education Dual Enrollment & Tuition Equalization Grant Ad Hoc Committee

ATLANTA – State Representative Carter Barrett (R-Cumming) was recently named vice chairman of the Dual Enrollment & Tuition Equalization Grant Ad Hoc Committee of the House Higher Education Committee. Rep. Barrett was appointed as vice chairman by House Higher Education Committee Chairman Chuck Martin (R-Alpharetta).

“I am proud to be named the vice chairman of the Committee on Dual Enrollment and Tuition Equalization Grants,” said Rep. Barrett. “Forsyth County is a big dual enrollment community, and I hope that more Forsyth County families will take advantage of this beneficial opportunity for their high school aged children, especially in this inflationary environment. I understand the program’s benefits on a very personal level. My daughter was able to achieve her associate degree prior to graduating from high school, while also obtaining real-world work experience as a tutor at UNG and gaining exposure to the broad offerings of Lanier Technical College. I am certain that her dual enrollment status also aided in her acceptance to Georgia Tech. In addition to giving her a leg up on her college curriculum and early exposure to the University and Technical College experience, it also enabled her to get the most out of her college experience with a reduced amount of stress.”

The Dual Enrollment & Tuition Equalization Grant Ad Hoc Committee of the House Higher Education Committee was established by Chairman Martin to conduct an in-depth review of two programs that affect many students and families throughout the state of Georgia. The committee has heard from stakeholders involved in both programs and will continue to work to examine how both programs operate in the coming months. The objective of this ad hoc committee is to gain a full understanding of these programs, discover their strengths and weaknesses and recommend changes or improvements as necessary.

During the committee’s first meeting on August 30, 2023, committee members heard from the President of the Student Finance Commission with overviews on Tuition Equalization Grants and Dual Enrollment and discussed the committee’s direction for future meetings.
