ATLANTA—Representative Katie Dempsey (R- Rome) joined Governor Deal, First Lady Sandra Deal, the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) and other state agencies at a press conference to promote the “Look Again” campaign. This campaign is a public awareness initiative that is designed to draw heightened awareness of the dangers of leaving children unattended in hot cars.
“I would like to thank Commissioner Jacobs, Governor Deal, the First Lady, and all the agency heads who are working to make the second annual ‘Look Again’ campaign a success,” said Rep. Dempsey. “With the high temperatures of the summer months upon us, it is essential that we make sharing this message a priority to all of our parents, grandparents, and caregivers across the state to ensure safety for our children. As summer officially begins I ask that we all remember to ‘Look Again’ to make sure that no child is accidentally left in a vehicle, to call 911 immediately if you see a child alone in a vehicle and to lock parked vehicles to prevent a tragedy because a child might be seeking shelter, retrieving a forgotten item or innocently playing inside your vehicle.”
“During our state’s hot summer months, there is a higher risk of serious injury or death as a result of a child being left alone inside a vehicle,” said Gov. Deal. “Since 2010, seven children in Georgia have died due to vehicular heatstroke. I ask that all Georgians join me in preventing future loss of life by being aware of your surroundings and never leaving a child in a car, even for just a minute. Lives can be saved if we take the time to Look Again.”
The “Look Again” campaign consists of nine partnering state agencies, as well as supporting sponsors, to increase public awareness of the risks of leaving children unattended in vehicles during the hot summer months in an effort to save lives. DECAL Commissioner Amy M. Jacobs stressed, “When you arrive at your destination, check the front and back of your car, and after you’ve looked, just to be sure, look again. There is absolutely no reason for a child to suffer or die in these conditions.”
Rep. Dempsey was selected to participate in the event because of her role as a board member of the Governor’s Office for Children and Families and the First Lady’s Children’s Cabinet.
