ATLANTA – State Representative Donna McLeod (D-Lawrenceville) recently introduced House Bills 393 and 519. HB 393 would create a tax deduction for child support payments, and HB 519 would require the State Board of Education to hire an independent consultant to review the state’s Quality Basic Education Formula.
“Passing legislation that ensures Georgia children and families have financial security and quality educational opportunities is my top priority this legislative session,” said Rep. McLeod. “I urge my colleagues to support this legislation that would benefit our state’s precious children and their families.”
House Bill 393 would create a tax income deduction for child support payments under certain circumstances. HB 393 would create a tax exemption for an individual who makes payments made pursuant to a child support order to the custodial parent or $3,000.00, or whichever is less. This bill would include taxable years starting on January 1, 2019, and only individuals that are up to date on their child support payments would be eligible for this deduction.
House Bill 519 would require the State Board of Education to hire and retain an independent third party consultant every five years to review the Quality Basic Education (QBE) Formula that is used for K-12 education funding throughout the state. By December 31, 2019, an educational consultant would begin working with the State Board of Education to analyze the current QBE Formula. Over a two year period, the independent consultant would make recommendations to the State Board of Education and to the Georgia General Assembly regarding administrative improvements and legislative initiates.
