ATLANTA— State Representative Edward Lindsey (R-Atlanta) was recently recognized by Friends of the Georgia Archives and History for supporting the continuing mission of the Georgia Archives. The mission of the Friends of the Georgia Archives includes making records and information available that increases our state government’s efficiency and protects the rights of Georgia’s citizens.

“I am proud to be an advocate for the Georgia Archives,” said Rep. Lindsey. “The Archives provides us with necessary information that increases governmental cooperation and interaction with its citizens.”

The award was given to Rep. Lindsey in recognition for his work in relocating the Georgia Archives to the University Board of Regents. The Friends of the Georgia Archives and History expressed their appreciation for Rep. Lindsey’s help in bringing this issue to the attention of Governor Deal. Rep. Lindsey recognized the need to relocate the Georgia Archives in state government to a division which would provide the support to restore the staffing needed to preserve the historical records of Georgia and make them accessible to the public. In addition to supporting the governor’s bill to move the Archives to the Board of Regents, Rep. Lindsey also supported the appropriations bill that partially restored funds for staffing needs.

As a result, the Archives moved from the Office of the Secretary of State to the Board of Regents on July, 1, 2013. In the past month the Georgia Archives has increased the number of its staff and expanded its hours of public access from two to four days a week.

The Friends of Georgia Archives and History, formed in 2004, is a not-for-profit organization that supports and enhances the programs of the Georgia Archives and the Georgia Capitol Museum. For more information about The Friends of Georgia Archives and History, please click here.
