Rep. Farooq Mughal Named Vice Chair of Georgia Legislative AAPI Caucus, Gwinnett County Public Safety Liaison

ATLANTA – State Representative Farooq Mughal (D-Dacula) was recently elected by members of the Georgia Legislative Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Caucus to serve as the vice chair of the caucus for the 2023-2024 legislative term.

“I would like to thank the members of the Georgia AAPI Legislative Caucus for electing me and entrusting me with this leadership role,” said Rep. Mughal. “As we continue moving through the 2023 legislative session, I will work to ensure the caucus promotes access to state contracting, monitors upcoming legislation, promotes workforce development and diversity for AAPIs and advocate on behalf of minority businesses.”

The bipartisan Georgia Legislative AAPI Caucus is one of the largest caucuses for AAPI legislators in the nation. The caucus seeks to increase AAPI representation at all levels of government and, in doing so, ensure that AAPI Georgians have a strong voice at the Capitol. The voting members of the caucus include State Representatives Michelle Au (D-Johns Creek), Charlice Byrd (R-Woodstock), Saira Draper (D-Atlanta), Soo Hong (R-Lawrenceville), Marvin Lim (D-Norcross), Farooq Mughal (D-Buford), Sam Park (D-Lawrenceville), Ruwa Romman (D-Peachtree Corners), Long Tran (D-Dunwoody), State Senators Sheikh Rahman (D-Lawrenceville) and Nabilah Islam (D-Lawrenceville).

In addition to being named vice chair of the Georgia Legislative AAPI Caucus, Rep. Mughal has been appointed to a new role to help keep Gwinnett County residents safe. The Gwinnett House Legislative Delegation leadership team has named Rep. Mughal as one of the delegation’s public safety liaisons for Gwinnett County’s judicial system, police and fire departments, district attorney, solicitor general and sheriff’s office to ensure their legislative priorities are considered. He previously served as the chairman of the Gwinnett County Community Outreach Board and president of the FBI Atlanta Citizens Academy Alumni Association.

“I want to thank the Gwinnett House Legislative Delegation leadership team for appointing me as the public safety liaison for this legislative term,” added Rep. Mughal. “I am looking forward to working with the many law enforcement and public safety officials on policy issues that curb crime and keep families safe in Gwinnett County. I am also excited to amplify the voices of my constituents by utilizing my knowledge in public policy, the legislative process and advocacy.”

Representative Farooq Mughal represents the citizens of District 105, which includes portions of Gwinnett County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2022 and currently serves on the Special Rules, Judiciary Non-Civil and State Planning & Community Affairs committees.
