ATLANTA – State Representative Virgil Fludd (D-Tyrone) announced that Camara Carter, Aisia Chatman, Samuel Jackson, Krystal Lunsford, Keiana Raven, Essodonda Telou and Mitchell Turner have won the Virgil L. Fludd Scholarship awards for 2011. Each year this scholarship awards select students from portions of Fulton and Fayette counties who demonstrate outstanding performance in both the classroom and the community.
“The scholarship was started to recognize the academic performance and community service of students in south metro Atlanta,” said Rep. Fludd. “We are delighted to continue this program and even more excited about helping these young people with their college careers.”
This year, each of the seven scholarship winners will receive $1,000 to use toward their education. Since 2005, a total of sixteen students from Fulton and Fayette counties have won this prestigious award.
“We have a lot of great young people and we need to support them as much as we can,” added Rep. Fludd.
Camara Carter attends Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone and has been accepted at Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. Aisia Chatman attends Westlake High School and will attend Savannah State University. Samuel Jackson attends Tri-Cities High School and will attend Albany State University. Krystal Lunsford attends Carver High School and has been accepted at the University of Georgia. Keiana Raven also attends Carver High and will attend Agnes Scott. Essodonda Telou attends Banneker High School and will attend the University of West Georgia. Mitchell Turner will graduate from Sandy Creek and attend the University of Georgia.
Rep. Fludd founded the Fludd Scholarship Program in 2005 to recognize student achievement. The program is available to graduating high school seniors in Georgia’s 66th House District who plan to attend a college and have outstanding academic and community service records.
The Fludd Scholarship program is funded by the annual Virgil Fludd Scholarship Golf Tournament. This golf tournament, held each October during Columbus Day weekend, brings in contributions from business and community sponsors, as well as golfers of all skill levels, from around the country.
