Rep. Glanton Appointed to Southern Legislative Conference Education Committee

ATLANTA – State Representative Mike Glanton (D-Jonesboro) was recently appointed by Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) to serve on the Education Committee of the Council of State Governments’ (CSG) Southern Legislative Conference (SLC).

“I am grateful that Speaker Ralston appointed me to serve on this distinguished committee, which will afford me the unique opportunity to exchange and share ideas with other committee members from across the southern region,” said Rep. Glanton. “Improving educational outcomes and opportunities for our students is always a top legislative priority, and education funding consistently makes up more than half of our state budget each year. Serving on this committee will allow me to learn best practices from other states and bring education policy ideas back to Georgia.”

The SLC Education Committee focuses on educational systems at all levels and investigates ways Southern states are ensuring their students are properly prepared for college entry and ready to compete in the increasingly global economy. Equally, the committee examines the importance of developing greater technical skills in state workforces, preparation and retainment of effective teachers, the incorporation of new technologies and methodologies in the educational field, and the impact of federal initiatives on state and local educational systems.

Established in 1947, the SLC is a member-driven organization and serves as the premier public policy forum for Southern state legislatures.

Founded in 1933, The Council of State Governments (CSG) is our nation’s only organization serving all three branches of state government. A regionally based organization, CSG fosters the exchange of insights and ideas to help state officials shape public policy. This offers unparalleled regional, national and international opportunities to network, develop leaders, collaborate and create problem-solving partnerships.

Representative Mike Glanton represents the citizens of District 75, which includes portions of Clayton County. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2006 and was re-elected in 2012. He currently serves as Vice Chairman on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, the Education subcommittee on Academic Innovation and the MARTOC subcommittee on Security and Innovation. He also serves on the Defense & Veterans Affairs, Education, MARTOC and Public Safety & Homeland Security committees.
