Rep. Glanton Commends House Passage of Military Retirement Tax Exemption Legislation

ATLANTA – State Representative Mike Glanton (D-Jonesboro) commends the House passage of House Bill 1064, legislation which would create a tax exemption for military retirement income. Rep. Glanton previously co-sponsored similar legislation, House Bill 7, during the 2019 legislative session to create this tax exemption for military retirees.

“I am honored to have been part of a bipartisan effort to bring forth this tax credit for several years now, and I want to thank my colleagues for their hard work to help get this legislation to the House floor this year,” said Rep. Glanton. “This bill would be a tremendous help to these military retirees who have sacrificed so much to serve our country, as well as attract more of this skilled workforce to Georgia. This legislation will specifically benefit the residents of House District 75, where many military families reside.”

House Bill 1064 would exempt up to $17,500 in military retirement income from state income taxes for retired service members under 62 years old. If a military retiree continues to work and earns up to $17,500, the retiree would be eligible for an additional exemption up to $17,500 in state income taxes for a total exemption of $35,000. This legislation would become effective July 1, 2022 and is applicable to all taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2022.

HB 1064 has been sent to the Georgia State Senate for its consideration.

Earlier this year, Governor Brian Kemp announced his plans to create this exemption.
