Rep. Hanson Announces House Passage of “Brunch Bill”

ATLANTA –– State Representative Meagan Hanson (R-Brookhaven) today announced that the Georgia House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 17, the “Brunch Bill,” on Monday, March 12, 2018. Rep. Hanson sponsored SB 17 in the House, and SB 17 would allow local governing authorities to authorize alcoholic beverages sales beginning at 11 a.m. on Sundays subject to the passage of a referendum.

“I was proud to sponsor this legislation to allow more local control by giving local governments the option to rollback Sunday morning alcohol sales,” said Rep. Hanson. “SB 17 is expected to increase sales by $100 million and generate approximately $11 million in additional state and local tax revenue. This measure would not change existing local alcohol sales laws, but it would give voters a voice in their communities to decide whether or not to approve of early Sunday sales.”

SB 17 would allow local governments to authorize by a local referendum alcohol sales beginning at 11 a.m. on Sundays. This bill would only apply to licensed establishments that derive at least 50 percent of their total annual gross sales from food sales or from room rentals for overnight lodging.

SB 17 will now go to Governor Nathan Deal for consideration. SB 17 requires the governor’s signature in order to take effect.
