Rep. Henderson’s Legislation to Encourage Women to Receive Mammograms Signed Into Law

ATLANTA – State Representative Sharon Henderson (D-Covington) today announced that Governor Brian Kemp signed House Bill 937, legislation to help encourage women to receive mammogram exams, into law on Friday, May 6, 2022. Rep. Henderson will also hold a press conference to discuss HB 937 on Monday, May 9, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. at the South Wing Steps of the Georgia State Capitol.

“As a female African American Democratic legislator, I am honored to have the governor sign my bill into law,” said Rep. Henderson. “This bill is close to my heart as I was just diagnosed this past year with a rare form of cancer. I am so proud to say that, due to early detection, I was able to ring the bell cancer-free recently. Unfortunately, for many women in Georgia, this is not the case. By providing mammogram reminders, we can better encourage women to schedule their annual mammograms and, hopefully, detect cancer earlier and help more women get the care they need before it’s too late.”

Under HB 937, insurance companies will now be required to send annual written notices to female clients starting when they turn 40 years old to remind them to receive a mammogram.

In a press release, the governor announced that he decided to sign Rep. Henderson’s legislation, along with several other bills, to help strengthen Georgia’s health care system.

This is Rep. Henderson’s first term in the Georgia House and her first bill to receive final passage and be signed into law.
