ATLANTA – State Representative Henry “Wayne” Howard (D-Augusta) will lead a kick-off event for the state’s “Assistance at the Pump” initiative on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at 10 a.m. at the Circle K (intersection of Lumpkin Rd. and Deans Bridge Rd.) in Augusta.
“There are very limited numbers of full service gas stations left in the state, leaving Georgians with disabilities stranded when it comes to a simple task of pumping gas,” said Rep. Howard. “I am proud that my legislation has encouraged the state leaders to step in and make pumping gas more manageable for disabled drivers.”
At the event, Rep. Howard will be joined by Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and representatives of the Georgia Association of Convenience Stores.
During the 2021 legislative session, Rep. Howard introduced House Bill 437, which would require gas station employees to dispense gas to disabled drivers in need of assistance. This bill would require decals to be affixed on gas pumps that include contact information to receive assistance. These decals would include a blank space for the gas station to fill in the phone number to reach an attendant and wording to instruct these drivers to call for assistance.
This legislation was passed by the House and referred to a Senate committee for consideration. However, Commissioner Black worked with Rep. Howard to start an initiative to affix these decals on gas pumps across the state.
