Rep. Houston Gaines Issues Statement in Response to Governor’s Announcement of New University of Georgia Medical School at Annual Eggs and Issues Breakfast

ATLANTA – State Representative Houston Gaines (R-Athens) today issued the following statement in response to Governor Brian Kemp’s recent announcement at the annual Georgia Chamber of Commerce Eggs & Issues event at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to include $50 million in this year’s budget for the University of Georgia to have a standalone medical school:

“Today is a significant step in the effort to bring a standalone medical school to Athens and the University of Georgia,” said Rep. Gaines. “I applaud Governor Brian Kemp, President Jere Morehead and everyone involved in this historic initiative. Today’s news is a monumental step forward for our community. I look forward to supporting the $50 million of funding for the new UGA medical school in this year’s legislative session as we work to ensure Georgia leads the country in medical education and training for our next generation of physicians.”

Representative Houston Gaines represents the citizens of District 120, which includes portions of Barrow, Clarke, Jackson and Oconee counties. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2018 and currently serves as Vice Chairman of the House Majority Caucus and the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education. He also serves on the Creative Arts & Entertainment, Ethics, Governmental Affairs, Insurance, Public Health, Urban Affairs and Ways & Means committees.
