Rep. Houston Named Vice-Chair of Special Appropriations Subcommittee

ATLANTA – Representative Penny Houston (R-Nashville) has been appointed Vice-Chairman of the Special Appropriations Subcommittee on the Department of Human Resources Governance.

“I am humbled to have been chosen for this important position,” said Rep. Houston. “It’ll be an exciting challenge to help shape the new direction of these state departments.”

The Special Appropriations Subcommittee on the Department of Human Resources Governance will be tasked with evaluating House Bill 228. This bill will reorganize Georgia’s health and human services agencies and establish the Department of Health, the Department of Human Services, and the Department of Behavioral Health. The bill would also reassign various functions of the Department of Community Health and the Department of Human Resources to these new agencies.

Rep. Ben Harbin (R-Evans), Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, said he named Rep. Houston to vice-chair the subcommittee because, “Rep. Houston has proven herself to be a capable leader. I have every confidence that she will be able to help steer this subcommittee in the right direction.”

The subcommittee will be chaired by Rep. Mickey Channell (R-Greensboro). Representatives Jim Cole, Calvin Smyre, Mike Coan, Austin Scott, Pat Gardner, Keith Heard, Judy Manning, Mary Margaret Oliver, and Earl Ehrhart will also serve on the subcommittee.
