ATLANTA – State Representative Johnnie Caldwell Jr. (R-Thomaston) recently received the Judge Martha K. Glaze Service Award from the Council of Juvenile Court Judges of Georgia at the Council’s fall meeting in Athens.
“I’m thankful to the Council of Juvenile Court Judges for selecting me for this prestigious award,” said Rep. Caldwell. “Georgia’s juvenile court judges work to protect our state’s most vulnerable citizens, and it was an honor to sponsor legislation last session to help these judges continue in their service to our state.”
Rep. Caldwell was nominated for this award for his work on behalf of Georgia’s juvenile court judges during the 2017 session of the Georgia General Assembly. The Executive Committee of the Council voted unanimously to present this award to Rep. Caldwell upon his nomination. Judge James Whitfield, President of the Council of Juvenile Court Judges, and Judge Ben J. Miller, Jr. presented the award to Rep. Caldwell.
The Judge Martha K. Glaze Service Award began during Clayton County Juvenile Court Judge Steven Teske’s term as President of the Council of Juvenile Court Judges (2008-2009). Judge Teske initiated a discussion about the Council’s need to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the Council or to the field of juvenile justice and child welfare. As a result of this conversation, the Council voted to annually give out the Judge Martha K. Glaze Service Award.
Judge Martha K. Glaze was appointed juvenile court judge of Clayton County in 1977 and served until her retirement in 1999. She served on the Board of Trustees of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and as president of the Council of Juvenile Court Judges of Georgia. She was a long serving chair of the Council’s Education and Certification Committee, which sets education standards for Georgia’s juvenile court judges.
Past notable recipients of this award include S. Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A; Irene Munn, Legislative Counsel to Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle; Joe Hood, formerly of the Georgia Office of Planning and Budget; and Avery Niles, Commissioner of the Department of Juvenile Justice of Georgia.
