Rep. Jon Burns Issues Statement on Active Shooter Threats Made Against Schools in the South Georgia Area

ATLANTA – State Representative Jon Burns (R-Newington), House Republican Caucus nominee for Speaker of the House, today issued the following statement regarding active shooter threats made against schools in the South Georgia area:

“Today, evil struck our community when the safety of Georgia’s coastal schools was placed at risk by threats of violence. While these threats thankfully resulted in no physical harm, I am disgusted by this attempted hoax and the unnecessary anguish it caused for so many children, teachers and concerned families. As a father and grandfather, I urge our state law enforcement officers to use all available resources to aid our federal and local law enforcement partners in their search to find those responsible for this needless act of domestic terrorism. Threats of violence against our children are never acceptable in Georgia, and I remain committed to providing all necessary support to bring the perpetrators of this hoax to justice.”

Representative Burns encourages anyone with information relating to the identity of the individual or individuals behind these threats to contact their local law enforcement agencies or the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Representative Jon Burns currently represents the citizens of District 159, which includes Screven County and portions of Bulloch and Effingham counties. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2006 and served as the House Majority Leader until he was nominated as the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 2023-2024 legislative term.
