Rep. Joseph Gullett Appointed to Georgia Commission on Family Violence

ATLANTA – State Representative Joseph Gullett (R-Gullett) was recently appointed by Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to serve on the Georgia Commission on Family Violence. His commission term will run concurrently to the 2023-2024 legislative term of the Georgia General Assembly.

“I want to thank Speaker Burns for appointing me to this vital commission with a mission that is extremely important to me,” said Rep. Gullett. “Unfortunately, Georgia was recently ranked 10th in the nation for its rate of men who kill women, and the number of family violence-related deaths in Georgia steadily increased between 2010-2019. This is simply unacceptable and heartbreaking. I look forward to contributing my legislative experience to support a coordinated community response to this serious issue.”

The Georgia Commission on Family Violence (GCFV) works to enhance a coordinated community response to address the issue of family violence by bringing together judges, advocates, law enforcement, medical professionals, educators and concerned citizens. The GCFV works with communities and systems across the state to provide leadership in strengthening Georgia’s families by ending family violence.

The GCFV is administratively attached to the Georgia Department of Community Supervision (DCS). The commission develops standards to be used by DCS in the certification and regulation of family violence intervention programs. The GCFV is also responsible for developing a comprehensive state plan for ending family violence, including the initiation, coordination and oversight of this state plan.

According to the GCFV, at least 1,380 Georgians lost their lives due to domestic violence from 2010-2019. The GCFV estimates that thousands more are victims of non-fatal domestic violence every year. The GSFV 2020 fact sheet on family violence may be found here.

Representative Joseph Gullett represents the citizens of District 19, which includes portions of Paulding County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2018 and currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Code Revision Committee and the Secretary of the Banks & Banking Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Economic Development and the Energy, Utilities & Telecommunications, Governmental Affairs, Insurance, Interstate Cooperation, Judiciary Non-Civil, Juvenile Justice and Technology and Infrastructure Innovation committees.
