ATLANTA – State Representative Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates), chair of the DeKalb County House Legislative Delegation, today announced that Alex Joseph was appointed by the delegation to serve as a member of the DeKalb County Board of Ethics. Joseph was originally appointed as an alternate member and will now replace Ambreen Delawalla, who resigned in March 2022. Joseph will complete Delawalla’s three-year term, which will expire December 31, 2023.
“I want to thank and commend Clerk DeBerry for selecting this distinguished citizen of DeKalb County,” said Rep. Drenner. “Alex Joseph’s outstanding record as an attorney will serve as an asset to our county’s ethics board. Her experience as a seeker of truth and justice will make her a great board member, and I know she will serve the board with integrity and authenticity.”
Joseph is an associate attorney with the Atlanta law firm Gray, Rust, St. Amand, Moffett & Brieske, LLP. Her professional experience includes working as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia and as a law clerk for the Superior Court of Georgia’s Cordele Circuit. Joseph is a member of the Georgia and South Carolina Bars. She also founded the Informed Georgians for Justice.
During the 2020 legislative session, members of the DeKalb County Legislative Delegation introduced House Bill 1243 to update the appointment process for the DeKalb County Board of Ethics. This legislation was enacted through a local referendum, which passed by an 87 percent margin. The most notable change to the appointment process is how the seven board members and two alternates are appointed. The following four DeKalb County appointing authorities are responsible for making the appointments to the board: the House and Senate legislative delegations, tax commissioner and clerk of the superior court.
