Rep. Katie Dempsey Promoted by New Speaker David Ralston

Named Vice-Chair of Higher Education, appointed to influential Rules Committee position

ATLANTA – State Representative Katie Dempsey’s standing in the House of Representatives took a step up today as new House Speaker David Ralston promoted Dempsey to Vice-Chair of the Higher Education Committee. He also named Dempsey to the influential Rules Committee and assigned her to four other committees.
Dempsey said her new committee assignments would help her better represent Rome and the issues that matter to her constituents.

“We need economic development, and education is the long-term key to that,” said Dempsey. “Serving on both the Higher Education and Economic Development committees will help me push for policies that create more jobs in our state and region.”

Dempsey’s other committees include Economic Development; Health and Human Services; Energy, Utilities & Telecommunications; and Budget Oversight, where Dempsey will also serve as a committee officer.

“The other committees I serve on are also on the cutting edge of issues we are facing, from healthcare to budget problems – and serving on the Rules Committee also allows me to have a hand in every bill that comes to the floor of the House. I am honored that Speaker Ralston chose to entrust greater responsibility to me, and I will be working very hard to use those positions to improve the lives of Rome’s citizens,” said Dempsey.

In addition to the new committee assignments, Dempsey remains a Deputy Whip of the House, assisting House leadership in moving legislation on the floor.
