Rep. Kendrick to Host Black-Owned Farms, Farm-to-Table Bistros Tour Event

ATLANTA – State Representative Dar’shun Kendrick (D-Lithonia), along with the Georgia Black Owned Farm Tours organization, will host a tour event to highlight Black-owned farms and farm-to-table bistros around the metro Atlanta area on Saturday, April 30, 2022, from 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. For information about each tour location, members of the press must contact Rep. Kendrick at dar’shun.kendrick@house.ga.gov.

Rep. Kendrick will be joined by State Representative Doreen Carter (D-Lithonia), outreach staff from the office of U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regional Administrator Daniel Blackman and his staff. Additionally, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and Mr. Blackman will give opening remarks at the beginning of the tour.

Tickets are sold out for this event. The public is encouraged to visit this Facebook page for announcements about tour events in June 2022. Members of the press are not required to purchase a ticket to attend these tours. Members of the press are responsible for their own transportation; transportation to each tour site will only be provided for ticket holders.

The tours will feature Black farmers and entrepreneurs in the Atlanta area who own, grow, sell and/or prepare organic, farm-grown food. The tour will begin and end at Unearthing Farm & Market and will stop at the following locations: Patchwork City Farms, Sweet Potato Café and Phoenix Gardens, LLC.

All participants will be able to purchase fresh produce and products. Individual farmers will share their personal stories, successes, failures, inspiration and vision for the future of Black agriculture. The tour will be followed by a light farm-fresh lunch, networking and cocktail hour.

“I am excited to partner with Rep. Kendrick on the first Black Farm Tour in Georgia,” said Rep. Carter. “Understanding how food affects our overall health, it is important to me that we pursue every effort to increase access and awareness of farming in urban areas.”

Rep. Kendrick will host this event in partnership with Nicole Clark, Clark Global Realty Group; Wayne Swanson, Swanson Family Farm, LLC; and Katrina “Katie” Kissel, Unearthing Farm and Market.

“This country was built on the unpaid labor of Black farmers in the south, and the descendants of these farmers are still suffering from hundreds of years of racist policy and gatekeeping of knowledge and funds,” said Katie Kissel. “Spotlighting and supporting our Black-owned farms here in Georgia is a small step in the direction of righting these injustices, and I am so grateful to be a part of an organization that is doing just that.”
