Rep. Lee Hawkins Joins Fight for ABLE Legislation in Georgia

ATLANTA – State Representative Lee Hawkins (R-Gainesville) recently held a press conference with Representative Scot Turner (R-Holly Springs), Senator Fran Millar (R-Atlanta), and Senator Renee Unterman (R-Buford) to announce their intent to file the “Achieving a Better Life Experience” (ABLE) Act legislation in Georgia. This legislation seeks to ease financial burdens for individuals with disabilities.

“This is meaningful legislation that already has the support of members of both the House and the Senate and addresses a very serious need among our citizens,” said Rep. Hawkins. “This legislation is necessary, but more importantly, I see it as common-sense.”

The ABLE Act is a federal law passed in 2014 that aims to ease financial strains faced by individuals with disabilities. An ABLE account is a tax-free savings account that may cover expenses such as medical care, education, community-based supports, employment training, assistive technology, housing and transportation. Georgia joins nine other state legislatures currently considering legislation, while 34 states have already enacted ABLE legislation.
