ATLANTA – State Representative Edward Lindsey (R-Atlanta) today announced the introduction of House Bill 199. This legislation would allow Georgia to utilize emerging technologies in water conservation by broadening the scope of the “Water Conservation and Drought Relief Act.”
“We must be cautious and pragmatic when managing our most valuable natural resource; water,” said Rep. Lindsey. “Access to clean water, conserving and managing existing reservoirs, and utilizing the most recent technologies in water conservation should be the goal of all Georgians. Protecting our water resources is a particular concern when we analyze the growth that is expected to take place in our state. We want to prosper as a state and region, and a critical ingredient of that prosperity is access to sufficient clean water.”
Recent technology developments have greatly increased the ability to measure and reduce water losses. HB 199 seeks to utilize these developments by applying free market forces that benefit a wide spectrum of Georgia businesses, both traditional and high tech, while reducing the economic cost and risk to rate and tax payers. The legislation would also allow the state to partner with businesses and utilities throughout the state in order to deploy meaningful options that are intended to secure Georgia’s water resources.
“Broadening the scope of the Water Conservation and Drought Relief Act is necessary to embrace the diverse programs that focus on water conservation and provide the state and its utilities with smart water grid technologies,” added Rep. Lindsey.
