ATLANTA— State Representative Edward Lindsey (R-Atlanta) announced today the introduction of House Bill 964, legislation which would expand charter schools through partnerships with businesses and municipalities.
“House Bill 964 encourages businesses and cities to contribute to the success of student learning by establishing charter schools,” said Rep. Lindsey. “This bill will promote greater community involvement in our schools and assist children in reaching their full potential.”
HB 964 allows for the creation of business partnership schools and municipal operated schools through charter school status. Business partnership schools, or satellite learning centers, would operate in a school facility provided by one or more business partner. Enrollment would be open to students whose parents are employed by the participating business partners. Similarly, municipal operated school enrollment would be available to children who reside in the operating municipality or municipalities.
Under HB 964, petitions for the creation of municipal operated or business partnership schools would be submitted to the local board of education in which the proposed school would be located.
Co-signers of the bill include State Representatives Earl Ehrhart (R-Powder Springs) and Tom Taylor (R-Dunwoody).
