ATLANTA – State Representative Mesha Mainor (D-Atlanta) commends the Cosmopolitan African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church for its 152nd Anniversary. Starting today, the Cosmopolitan A.M.E. Church will hold several virtual events via Zoom to celebrate the anniversary. To participate in these events, please click here or dial 301-715-8592; the meeting ID is 9865825328. The schedule is as follows:

  • Virtual revival will be held TODAY, Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.;
  • Virtual celebration services will be held on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

“I am proud to represent the community that is a part of the Cosmopolitan AME Church,” said Rep. Mainor. “For 152 years, this congregation has served as a ‘light on a hill’ for Atlanta, especially in the Vine City neighborhood. As the Westside of Atlanta continues to grow and flourish, I hope and pray that this church will remain a cornerstone to the communities it serves for the next 152 years.”

In 1869, the Cosmopolitan AME Church was organized by six families from Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta. Services were first held in a box car on the railroad tracks, which is now near the Omni Hotel and CNN Center. However, the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railway Company purchased the church’s property for expansion, and the congregation then settled in the Vine City neighborhood in 1907. The church was originally named Little Bethel and eventually renamed to Cosmopolitan, which means “far reaching with an unlimited scope.”

The church has served the surrounding area through many different ministries over the years, including a partnership with United Way for food drives, a thriving clothing ministry, and the church “adopts” families each year to offer a broad range of support. The church also hosts back-to-school drives, as well as a knitting and crochet circle that provides outerwear for the homeless. This congregation also provides support to associated churches, both domestic and abroad. They also host voter registration drives, COVID-19 testing and training and development events for seminarians. Additionally, the church is building a new sanctuary adjacent to the Rodney Cook Sr. Park, which is currently under construction.

Representative Mesha Mainor represents the citizens on District 56, which includes portions of Fulton County. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 and currently serves on the Education, Governmental Affairs and State Planning & Community Affairs committees.
