Rep. Marcus Wiedower Named to Powerful House Committees

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives’ Committee on Assignments named State Representative Marcus Wiedower (R-Watkinsville) as a new member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government, which assists with crafting the state budget, as well as the House Ways & Means Committee, which is responsible for tax-writing legislation.

“It is an honor and a privilege to join an Appropriations subcommittee and our chief tax-writing committee,” said Rep. Wiedower. “I spent my first two years in office working to preserve important state funds that benefit our state, and I also fought to make sure Georgia’s tax code can keep the state’s business climate competitive, which is even more important due to the current recession. This session, my time on these new committees will be guided by conservative, family-first values that continue bring innovative opportunities to our district and state.”

Under the authority of the House Appropriations Committee, the Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government specifically considers portions of the state budget that impact various state agencies, such as the Department of Revenue, Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Driver Services.

The House Ways & Means Committee is the chief tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives. This committee derives a large share of its jurisdiction from the state Constitution which declares, “All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives.”

During the 2021-2022 legislative term, Rep. Wiedower will also serve as Vice Chairman of the Intergovernmental Cooperation Committee and Secretary of the Transportation Committee, as well as a member of the Higher Education, Motor Vehicles and Natural Resources & Environment committees.

The House Committee on Assignments, chaired by House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge), is charged with making all House committee assignments for the members of the Georgia House of Representatives.
