Rep. Mark Hamilton Receives Legislative Leadership Award

ATLANTA — State Representative Mark Hamilton (R- Cumming) recently received the Council of State Court Judges of Georgia’s Legislative Leadership Award. The Council of State Court Judges chose Rep. Hamilton for this award based on his support and leadership on behalf of the Council during the 2014 Legislative Session.

“It is an honor to be recognized by such a distinguished group of individuals,” said Rep. Hamilton. “It was a pleasure to work so closely this session with members of the Council of State Court Judges of Georgia. I look forward to working together in the future to create legislative initiatives that will continue to improve Georgia’s criminal justice system.”

Rep. Hamilton was presented with the Legislative Leadership Award on May 6, 2014 at the Spring Conference of the Council of State Court Judges. The award was presented by the President of the Council of State Court Judges, Judge Linda Cowen.

“Rep. Hamilton worked tirelessly on very important legislation in an effort to clarify the law relating to the supervision of those on probation for misdemeanor offenses,” said Hon. Judge Linda Cowen. “He understands that this is an issue of public safety for our state. The Council of State Court Judges appreciates his quick grasp of the issues involved, his efforts to educate others in the legislature, his intelligence, and his skill. He certainly deserves recognition for that effort.”

“Over the years I have worked with many of our wonderful state legislators on many types of proposed legislation, but I have not seen anyone work so tirelessly and focused to understand all of the legally complex aspects of misdemeanor sentencing and the positive needs of probation as did Representative Mark Hamilton,” said Bob Bray, Executive Director of the Council of State Court Judges. “His knowledge, skill and leadership were directly responsible in obtaining both the House and Senate approval of HB 837 and getting it before the Governor for his final consideration. All this he accomplished in the face of a strong media campaign designed to distract discussions away from the main purposes of this bill. His personal efforts exceeded our expectations in every way – and for that we are extremely grateful.”

Representative Mark Hamilton represents the citizens of District 24, which includes portions of Forsyth County. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2006 and currently serves as Chairman of the Industry and Labor Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations, Energy, Utilities, & Telecommunications, Governmental Affairs, Rules, and Transportation committees.
