ATLANTA – State Representative Marvin Lim (D-Norcross) and the Georgia Department of Education’s (GaDOE) Pupil Transportation Division have recently partnered to update and promote “Operation Stop Arm,” the department’s effort to ensure Georgians stop for school buses.
“Road safety will always be the most important issue when it comes to transportation but especially with the rise in traffic accident injuries in recent years,” said Rep. Lim. “I am thankful that the Georgia Department of Education worked with me over the summer to modernize Operation Stop Arm, after I came to them with the concern that many Georgians remained confused about the law – myself included, for a long time. Even when they have noble purposes behind them, our laws are not always the easiest to understand, and we can always strive to communicate better with our constituents. In this case, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate on an often-misunderstood, but critical law for road and overall public safety. I am thankful as well for Melanie Jacobson and her design instincts.”
As part of their collaboration, Rep. Lim and GaDOE have jointly designed new materials to explain Georgia law, which provides that drivers must stop for school buses when the bus has displayed its stop sign. The only exception applies when there is a raised median, rather than just a center or turning lane, on a four-lane or larger two-way road. Those who violate these laws could face penalties, including a minimum $1,000 fine.
