Rep. Marvin Lim Submits Criteria Requests for GCPS Superintendent Search

ATLANTA – State Representative Marvin Lim (D-Norcross) recently issued a letter to Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) Board of Education outlining his requests and recommendations for the ongoing GCPS Superintendent search.

“As the State Representative for House District 98 — home to the Meadowcreek Cluster, the most diverse and under resourced in Gwinnett County Public Schools — I urge the board to prioritize superintendent candidates with not just stated commitments, but a well-documented, measurable record of success in communities like ours,” said Rep. Lim. “While I don’t claim to speak for every individual in House District 98, these requests and recommendations reflect the broad needs of the families and educators I serve. Our next superintendent must lead with equity, proven effectiveness and a deep understanding of the communities they represent.”

In his letter, Rep. Lim requests that the GCPS Board of Education identify more than one finalist for the superintendent position. Additionally, Rep. Lim recommends that the GCPS Board of Education choose a superintendent that would increase overall funding and personnel retention in Title I schools, enhance transparency by making school-specific budgets publicly available and prioritize expanding English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsements and special education staff, including considering salary waivers to equate ESOL experience with master’s level pay. Rep. Lim also recommends GCPS Board of Education choose a superintendent that would work to streamline student enrollment processes to boost participation, particularly in programs like ESOL, McKinney-Vento and Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE), while also expanding International Student programming and integrating special needs students where appropriate.

Additionally, Rep. Lim requests that the GCPS Board of Education consider a candidate who would prioritize expanding early childhood education and Outside School Time programming, implementing comprehensive needs assessments that address health and social factors, enhancing school health initiatives—including the availability of Narcan—and strengthening Communities in Schools support for at-risk students. Rep. Lim further recommends that the GCPS Board of Education select a superintendent who would focus on expanding transportation options for programs held outside traditional school hours, strengthening multilingual communication with families and establishing ongoing feedback mechanisms from staff, parents and students to support overall improvement.
