ATLANTA – State Representative Mary Ann Santos (D-McDonough) today celebrates the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 – October 15.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich cultures, histories and contributions of Hispanic communities across Georgia,” said Rep. Santos. “There is no single Hispanic story. Our communities represent different countries, traditions and experiences, but each has helped make Georgia what it is today.”
Rep. Santos notes that the month begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. It also includes the independence days of Mexico on September 16, Chile on September 18 and Belize on September 21. Rep. Santos further notes more than one million Hispanic residents call Georgia home and emphasizes that National Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes their contributions and gives Georgians an opportunity to learn more about the people, cultures and traditions that are part of the state.
“As a first-generation American and Latina serving in the Georgia General Assembly, I understand what it means to walk into a room and realize someone like you may not have been there before,” added Rep. Santos. “That is why representation matters. I want every young person to know that their voice belongs in those rooms too. Be proud of where you come from, believe in what you can become, and never be afraid to take your seat at the table.”
Rep. Santos encourages Georgians to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by attending community events, learning about Hispanic cultures and histories and supporting Hispanic-owned small businesses.

ATLANTA – La representante estatal Mary Ann Santos (D-McDonough) celebra hoy el inicio del Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana, que se conmemora del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre.
“El Mes de la Herencia Hispana es un momento para celebrar la riqueza de las culturas, historias y contribuciones de las comunidades hispanas en todo Georgia”, expresó la Rep. Santos. “No existe una sola historia hispana. Nuestras comunidades representan distintos países, tradiciones y experiencias, pero cada una ha contribuido a hacer de Georgia el estado que es hoy.”
La Rep. Santos señala que el mes comienza el 15 de septiembre, aniversario de la independencia de Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. También incluye los días de independencia de México, el 16 de septiembre; Chile, el 18 de septiembre; y Belice, el 21 de septiembre. La Rep. Santos también señala que más de un millón de residentes hispanos llaman a Georgia su hogar y destaca que el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana reconoce sus contribuciones y brinda a los habitantes de Georgia la oportunidad de conocer más sobre las personas, culturas y tradiciones que forman parte del estado.
“Como estadounidense de primera generación y latina que sirve en la Asamblea General de Georgia, entiendo lo que significa entrar a un lugar y darte cuenta de que quizá nunca antes hubo allí alguien como tú”, agregó la Rep. Santos. “Por eso la representación importa. Quiero que cada joven sepa que su voz también pertenece en esos espacios. Siéntete orgulloso de tus raíces, cree en lo que puedes llegar a ser y nunca tengas miedo de ocupar tu lugar en la mesa.”
La Rep. Santos anima a los habitantes de Georgia a celebrar el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana asistiendo a eventos comunitarios, aprendiendo sobre las culturas e historias hispanas y apoyando a los pequeños negocios de propietarios hispanos.
Representative Mary Ann Santos represents the citizens of District 117, which includes a portion of Henry County. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2024 and currently serves on the Code Revision, Judiciary, Juvenile and State Properties committees. She also serves as vice chair of the Women’s Caucus.
