Rep. Matt Barton Named Vice Chairman of Key House Committees

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives’ Committee on Assignments named State Representative Matt Barton (R-Calhoun) as the Vice Chairman of the House Energy, Utilities, & Telecommunications Committee and the House Motor Vehicles Committee.

“I am excited and eager to represent my constituents as I step into the role of Vice Chairman of these two vital House committees,” said Rep. Barton. “I learned firsthand during my eight year tenure on the Calhoun City Council just how critical it is that all citizens have access to low-cost and dependable utilities in their homes. During that time, I observed the substantial investment required by local governments and private utilities to provide dependable services to their residents & businesses. I look forward to learning even more in this leadership role and am intent to partner both with local governments and private utility corporations to ensure that all Georgians have reliable security and quiet comfort in their homes, businesses and community as a whole.”

The House Committee on Assignments, chaired by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington), is charged with making all House committee assignments for the members of the Georgia House of Representatives.

The Energy, Utilities, & Telecommunications Committee is responsible for legislation concerning the energy, gas, electric, and other related industry areas. It is also responsible for the rules and regulations concerning the telecommunications industry.

The Motor Vehicles Committee deals with issues concerning Driver’s Licenses, Motor Carrier laws, and the Uniform Rules of the Road. It also deals with laws pertaining to motor vehicle tags, their titles, and registration.

“Our driving laws are vital to keeping citizens safe as they go about their daily lives,” added Rep. Barton. “As such, I am also looking forward to examining ways to streamline our motor vehicle laws while also ensuring that Georgians safe while driving.”

Additionally, Rep. Barton was named as a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Human Resources and the Industry & Labor, Small Business Development and Transportation committees.
