Rep. Mike Cameron Reminds Constituents of Tax Credits on 2023 Property Tax Bills

ATLANTA – State Representative Mike Cameron (R-Rossville) today reminds homeowners in House District 1 who previously filed a homestead exemption that they will receive a credit on their 2023 property tax bills. This credit comes as a result of the Homeowner Tax Relief Grants included in House Bill 18, the Amended Fiscal Year 2023 (AFY 2023) budget, which Governor Brian Kemp signed into law on March 13, 2023.

“I encourage all eligible Georgians in House District 1 to be on the lookout for this one-time tax credit that was automatically applied to their 2023 property tax bills that were recently issued,” said Rep. Cameron. “With inflation at a record high in many parts of the country, I am proud that Georgia is putting money back into taxpayers’ pockets by reducing homeowners’ tax liability. The Homeowner Tax Relief Grant is an excellent example of sound public policy implemented by Governor Kemp and our state legislature to ensure that every Georgian sees some financial relief amid such economic uncertainty and instability. I commend Gov. Kemp and my colleagues in the House and Senate for continuing to put Georgian’s first with initiatives such as this.”

During the 2023 legislative session, the Georgia General Assembly appropriated $950 million in the AFY 2023 budget to establish a one-time Property Tax Relief Grant program for eligible Georgia homeowners. Also known as Homeowner Tax Relief Grants, this program provided every eligible Georgia homeowner with a chance to receive up to an $18,000 reduction of the assessed value of their homestead property. To be eligible, homeowners must already have a homestead exemption or must have applied for a homestead exemption prior to April 1, 2023. Now, those who qualified for the tax credit will see a credit issued on their 2023 property tax bill, reducing the amount owed to the county at the end of the year.

Georgia homeowners who qualified for the tax credit should look for a notation on their 2023 property tax bill that reads: “The HTRG Credit Reduction shown on your bill is the result of Homeowner Tax Relief Grant enacted by the Governor and the General Assembly of the State of Georgia.”
