Rep. Sandra Scott to Participate in Community Conversation on Ethical Policing in Georgia

ATLANTA – State Representative Sandra Scott (D-Rex), along with Reps. Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) and Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain), will participate in the Urban League of Greater Atlanta’s Community Conversation on Ethical Policing in Georgia on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to participate via Zoom webinar; to register in advance for Zoom access, please click here. Due to limited space, the in-person participation option is available by invitation only. To learn more about participating in-person, please contact Rep. Scott at sandra.scott@house.ga.gov.

During the event, Reps. Scott, Schofield and Davis will discuss House Bill 35, sponsored by Rep. Scott, which would provide additional procedures and requirements for law enforcement officers and agencies in order to ensure “ethical policing” and set standards for “ethical policing” in Georgia law. It would also authorize local municipalities to create and operate citizen review boards to ensure accountability for ethical police conduct, as well as direct the attorney general to create a form for local agencies to use to record complaints alleging police misconduct and disciplinary actions for such misconduct. These legislators will also be joined by John Moye, Urban League of Atlanta; and Lee Reid, Atlanta Citizens Review Board.

“HB 35 will answer a lot of questions we have about policing in Georgia,” said Rep. Scott. “HB 35 is a response to the lack of common sense mechanisms for holding police officers accountable for clear incidents of misconduct, including abuse of authority and excessive or deadly use of force. It resolves the all too common patterns of police misconduct that go unaddressed, allowing bad actors to remain employed. Ethical policing replaces the grey areas in which police misconduct takes place, with clearly delineated expectations for professionalism. It grounds policing in respect for the profession, the law and public safety, bringing balance to what has become a highly imbalanced policing culture.”

This is the first in a series of community events to discuss HB 35. Details regarding these future community events are forthcoming.
