Rep. Schofield Awards Ms. R. Denise Summers with Yellow Rose/Nikki T. Randall Servant Leadership Award

ATLANTA – State Representative Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) today announced that she has selected Ms. R. Denise Summers as a recipient of the Yellow Rose/Nikki T. Randall Servant Leadership Award.

“I am so proud of the true servant’s heart shown by Ms. Summers,” said Rep. Schofield. “She is a value to Hapeville and has impacted communities across Georgia. This privileged resolution recognizes the vital role that she has played in her career and church community, as well as her deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia.”

Ms. Summers was a founding member of the Georgia Association of Public Pension Trustees (GAPPT), which provides education and certification training for individuals elected or appointed as trustees of pension plans throughout the state. She retired in 2011 after 30 years of service.

Following her retirement from the GAPPT, Ms. Summers focused her time and energy into the First Baptist Church of Hapeville, helping members of her community who are in need. At the onset of the pandemic, Summers began a food ministry to provide hot meals three days a week and distribute essential items to those in need. Since then, the ministry has grown to include volunteers and food suppliers and provides hot meals to multiple shelters, a street ministry, a church for the homeless and a hotel helping those displaced by the pandemic.

This award was created in honor of former State Representative Nikki T. Randall, who became the first African American female elected to the Georgia General Assembly. Former Rep. Randall served as chair of the Georgia Legislative Women’s Caucus. Every year during Women’s History Month, this caucus recognizes outstanding women in Georgia who exemplify the leadership and inspiration embodied by former Rep. Randall.

Rep. Schofield also introduced House Resolution 886 to recognize and commend Ms. R. Denise Summers for her dedicated service to Georgia. The Georgia House of Representatives recently adopted this privileged resolution on March 3, 2022.
