Rep. Schofield to Participate in Atlanta Continuum-of-Care Survey of Unsheltered Homeless Population

ATLANTA – State Representative Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta), along with Atlanta City Councilmember At-Large Keisha Waites, will participate in the Atlanta Continuum-of-Care (CoC) 2022 “Point in Time Count” survey TODAY, January 24, 2022, from 10 p.m. – 3 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church (1328 Peachtree Street NE).

“The increase of COVID-19 cases due to the Omicron variant and the rising number of unsheltered residents are huge concerns,” said Rep. Schofield. “Whether someone lacks a permanent place of residence or is in need of a house or home, unsheltered people need access to a diversity of resources that will protect them and provide for a better quality of life. Gathering data and surveying the needs of this most vulnerable population will help the city and state provide better solutions and take action. I look forward to volunteering in tandem with Councilmember Waites and the Atlanta CoC tonight.”

Starting at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 volunteers will conduct a survey of Atlanta’s unsheltered homeless residents who sleep at nearby outdoor locations, such as sidewalks, parks, encampments and under bridges. To enable the Atlanta CoC to effectively plan housing and service interventions, the survey will include demographic information on each homeless individual, give insight into their history and assess individual needs.

“In the great words of Dr. Martin Luther King, ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to injustice everywhere,’” said Councilmember Waites. “We have a moral obligation to provide resources to our most vulnerable populations. Working to address the needs of the unsheltered homeless population was work I started during my tenure in the Georgia General Assembly. I am excited to form a collaboration with our state partners, Rep. Schofield and Partners for Home, to find meaningful solutions to end homelessness.”

In 2013, the Atlanta Continuum-of-Care was created as a local collaborative that coordinates housing, services and funding for homeless families and individuals. Partners for HOME, a 501(c)3 organization, was created to operate and administer the Atlanta CoC, with a goal to further public-private partnerships for this work.
