ATLANTA – State Representative Sandra Scott (D-Rex) recently sponsored legislation to protect individuals from discrimination in housing, public accommodations and employment opportunities. Originally, introduced during the 2019 legislative session, House Bill 19 is currently in the House Judiciary Committee to be considered during the 2020 legislative session.
“In the wake of the recent U.S. Supreme Court cases that are evaluating LGBTQ workplace discrimination, I would like to make constituents aware that House Bill 19 is currently on the table for state legislators to consider,” said Rep. Scott. “I fully intend to do everything in my power to help my colleagues at the State Capitol see the importance of such legislation, and as Georgians, I hope we can join other states that allow people to live differently, love differently and love thyself.”
House Bill 19 would protect citizens from discrimination by employers, businesses or landlords. The bill would safeguard against discrimination towards any person or group that is seeking housing opportunities in the state. Additionally, HB 19 states that homes that are for sale, or leased or job listings would not be able to advertise with any preference for a specific race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, familial status or national origin.
