Rep. Sheila Jones Stands for Access to Legal Abortions

ATLANTA – State Representative Sheila Jones (D-Atlanta) recently participated in a Georgia House Democratic Caucus (GHDC) press conference to express her support for access to legal abortions.

“We cannot afford to stand by and allow this to happen,” said Rep. Jones. “I have always supported and will continue to support a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her reproductive choices. Let us continue to organize, mobilize, lobby and stand in support of a woman’s right to choose.”

On Monday, May 9, Rep. Jones, along with her GHDC colleagues, discussed the recently leaked U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion. Rep. Jones and these Democratic legislators expressed their concerns that overturning Roe v. Wade would allow Georgia legislators to pursue new anti-abortion measures.

In 2019, HB 481 was passed and signed into law to prohibit most abortion operations once a fetal heartbeat has been determined by a doctor, which is typically decided at six weeks of gestational age. HB 481 was ruled as unconstitutional by a federal court judge in 2020, and this federal judge cited Roe v. Wade in his ruling.

Representative Sheila Jones serves in the House of Representatives. She currently serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education, the Health & Human Services, Juvenile Justice and Transportation committees.
