ATLANTA — State Representative Brian Strickland (R-McDonough) today announced that he is sponsoring House Bill 518. This legislation addresses public safety issues at school bus stops.
House Bill 518 would require school bus drivers to activate the school bus’s amber flasher lights 200 feet before and after a designated school bus stop. This bill would also require approaching vehicles to stop while the bus’s amber lights are flashing. Those vehicles would not be permitted to proceed until the lights on the bus are no longer flashing.
“This bill will address the safety concerns we have seen at bus stops where children enter the road before their bus arrives or attempt to run out in the road after missing a bus,” said Rep. Strickland. “This added precaution will put drivers on notice that children may be entering a road at the sight of a bus approaching and leaving a house.”
This issue was brought to light after an eleven year old child was struck and killed last year in Locust Grove after missing the bus.
