Rep. Tom Kirby Named to Southern Legislative Conference Human Services and Public Safety Committee

ATLANTA – House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) today announced the appointment of State Representative Tom Kirby (R-Loganville) to the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC) Human Services and Public Safety Committee. As the presiding officer of the Georgia House of Representatives, Speaker Ralston is charged with selecting members to represent Georgia within SLC.

“It is a real honor to be asked to serve on the Human Services and Public Safety Committee. This committee addresses some of the state’s most pressing concerns by ensuring the public’s general welfare and protection,” said Rep. Kirby. “However, it is important to note that this new position will not interfere with my top priority of serving the people of District 114. I will still be here to listen and learn from my constituents.”

The Human Services & Public Safety Committee is one of six SLC standing committees. According to SLC, the committee’s agenda typically addresses the challenges states face in the areas of human services and corrections, as well as policies and programs utilized to meet those challenges. Most recently the committee has undertaken assessments of Medicaid and reform, the nursing shortage, long-term health care, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and corrections issues.

Founded in 1947, the Southern Legislative Conference is the largest of four regional legislative groups operating under the Council of State Governments. The 15 SLC member states are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. By working together within the SLC and participating on its committees, Southern state legislative leaders are able to speak in a distinctive, unified voice to address the issues that affect their states and the greater region.
