Rep. Waites Congratulates UNG Military Scholarship Recipient

ATLANTA – State Representative Keisha Waites (D-Atlanta) today congratulated Ms. Pilar Martinez-Vargas of Forest Park High School who was recently awarded the Georgia Military Scholarship to attend the University of North Georgia. Rep. Waites nominated Ms. Martinez-Vargas and will present the scholarship to her at the Forest Park High School Awards Banquet.

“I would first like to congratulate my constituent and a very deserving recipient of the Georgia Military Scholarship, Ms. Pilar Martinez-Vargas,” said Rep. Waites. “With only 42 scholarships awarded each year, it is a true testament to her hard work, and I was proud to nominate Pilar for this incredible opportunity. UNG is one of only six Senior Military Colleges in the nation, and I know she will represent District 60 and the entire state of Georgia well as a cadet at UNG.”

The Georgia Military Scholarship awards 42 scholarships annually, each totaling $70,000 over four years. The scholarship covers the cost of uniforms, tuition, books, fees, room, and board, as well as a monthly stipend. In addition to pursuing a bachelor’s degree from UNG, scholarship recipients will be commissioned as second lieutenants in the Georgia Army National Guard upon graduation.

Applicants must be accepted to the University of North Georgia, and are required to present a letter of recommendation from a sitting State Representative or State Senator. To qualify, applicants must also be a legal resident of Georgia, have a minimum 3.0 high school grade-point average, meet the physical and health standards for serving in the Georgia National Guard, and be a freshman entering the UNG Corps of Cadets.
