ATLANTA – State Representative Yasmin Neal (D-Jonesboro) recently announced the House passage of House Bill 283 to give citizens the choice of whether or not to sign a traffic citation when pulled over by law enforcement.
“It is a pleasure to move legislation that everyone can get behind that helps citizens, law enforcement and saves tax payer dollars all at the same time,” said Rep. Neal. “It’s a great day in Georgia! I look forward to attempting to move additional good legislation that everyone can get behind to help our great state.”
HB 283, sponsored by Rep. Neal, would allow individuals the option to refuse to sign a citation without facing immediate arrest or the need to post bond as long as they agree to appear in court. This bill seeks to reduce negative encounters between citizens and law enforcement, decrease taxpayer costs, free up law enforcement for higher priority tasks and reduce unnecessary jail occupancy. HB 283 received bipartisan support and has been sent to the Senate for their consideration.
