Representative Tanya Miller Selected to Join NewDEAL Network of Public Leaders

ATLANTA – State Representative Tanya Miller (D-Atlanta) has been selected to join NewDEAL (Developing Exceptional American Leaders), a national leadership organization comprised of state and local elected officials. The organization’s membership is united by their goal to enact pro-growth progressive solutions across their array of communities.

“We are in a vitally important moment for state and local leaders as we work to channel transformational levels of federal aid while grappling with the challenges that will continue to affect the economic security of Georgia for decades to come,” said Rep. Miller. “I look forward to sharing lessons with and learning from other leaders who are setting the standard for effective governance, and I am excited to be part of NewDEAL’s efforts to expand opportunities for Americans in communities nationwide.”

Rep. Miller was selected for her dedication to community-centered public safety and criminal justice reform to promote opportunities for more Georgians. Rep. Miller’s key initiative is the Transparency in Policing Act, which provides general definitions and guidelines for the widespread use of body cameras and audio recordings of activities while on duty. Rep. Miller has served as an attorney for the Department of Justice and as an Assistant District Attorney in Fulton County. As a current civil rights and criminal defense attorney, Rep. Miller is committed to fostering change and creating a brighter future for her constituents in House District 62 and beyond.

Since the organization’s founding, more than 2,000 public leaders have been nominated over the last 13 years. Rep. Miller is one of 19 public officials selected to join this year’s class of leaders. The NewDEAL network now includes about 200 public officials from across 49 states.

Most recently, the network has focused on responding to economic issues around the cost of living, the changing nature of work, climate change, racial inequities and protecting democracy. NewDEALers work together to share model policies and programs, including through in-person and virtual convenings. NewDEAL members have also coordinated the effective use of federal resources flowing to states, counties and cities. NewDEAL members have also contributed to policy recommendations on education, climate change, broadband and the future of work.

NewDEAL will host the 2023 Leaders Conference from November 15-17 in Washington D.C. During the conference, approximately 60 members will join other innovators from the public and private sectors to discuss a forward-looking agenda for state and local Democrats, including A.I., housing, education and climate change.

The NewDEAL project brings together leaders focused on expanding opportunity, helping them develop and spread innovative ideas to spur economic growth that is broadly-earned and sustainable. The organization facilitates the exchange of ideas among its members and connects them with other pro-growth progressive political, policy and private sector leaders. NewDEAL alumni have included Pete Buttigieg, Stacey Abrams, Jason Kander, Alex Padilla, Ben McAdams and more.

This organization is currently led by two honorary co-chairs, U.S. Senator Chris Coons and U.S. Rep. Marilyn Strickland.
