ATLANTA – State Representative Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) touts U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and U.S. Representative Hank Johnson’s (D-GA-04) introduction of legislation that seeks to boost opportunities for Georgia’s women and minority-owned small businesses. Known as the Small Business Contracting Fairness Act, this legislation would amend the bipartisan infrastructure law, allowing more Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs) to qualify for federally supported contracting opportunities and compete for critical infrastructure projects upgrades across Georgia.

Their call for increased funding comes after U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack sent letters to the governors of 16 states, including Georgia, asking each to raise funding for HBCUs.

In our society, where homeownership is often considered a symbol of financial security and stability, property taxes can be a heavy burden, especially for elderly citizens living on fixed incomes. Many older individuals and couples find themselves struggling to pay property taxes, which can sometimes be relatively modest amounts, typically less than $5,000 per year. We will explore the challenges faced by elderly citizens in meeting their property tax obligations, and we hope to raise important questions about the ethics and implications of forcing these individuals out of their homes due to unpaid taxes.
