ATLANTA – State Representatives Sandra Scott (D-Rex), Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain) and Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) will hold a press conference with legal advocates to discuss a federal lawsuit against the Georgia Board of Regents for the State University System regarding disparate funding between Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and their land-grant counterparts TOMORROW, Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. at the Richard B. Russell Federal Building in Atlanta.
“Between fiscal years 2011 and 2022, Black land-grant universities alone lost nearly $200 million in resources because states declined to provide matching funds, while they fully funded their land-grant universities,” said Rep. Scott. “Indeed, Fort Valley State University is believed to have lost over $600 million compared to the University of Georgia on a per-student funding basis over the past 30 years. This lawsuit will be filed on Tuesday morning to rectify the years of disparate funding and set the course for a more equitable process of higher-learning institutional funding for generations to come.”
