Reps. Bennett, Carter and Kendrick Host “Back to School Zone”

ATLANTA – State Representatives Karen Bennett (D-Stone Mountain), Doreen Carter (D-Lithonia) and Dar’shun Kendrick (D-Lithonia) hosted “Back to School Zone,” a community event for students and families, on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at the Redan Recreation Center in Lithonia, Ga. The event featured a job fair for teenagers, a helmet safety clinic and free sports physicals.

“Over one hundred students and their families attended the first ‘Back to School Zone,’ and Rep. Bennett, Rep. Carter and I were all pleased that the event provided much needed services to the community,” said Rep. Kendrick.

“The free sports physicals and the teen job fair were greatly appreciated, and we received lots of positive feedback from kids, teens and parents,” said Rep. Bennett. “Bringing together top health professionals, stellar speakers, key local employers and professional athletes was a tremendous benefit to all who attended.”

“The teenagers who attended the job fair were well prepared, and a few of them even had resumes to give to the employers,” said Rep. Carter. “The teen job fair was a great way to connect youth with employment opportunities. Hats off to the parents and career advisors who thoroughly prepared these students for the job fair.”

The teen job fair connected teenagers with potential employers, including Bojangles’, Georgia Works!, Georgia World Congress Center, McDonald’s and Stone Mountain Park. Speakers provided students with tips on how to successfully search for a job.

USA Football Youth Southeast Regional Manager Ian Holmes conducted a football and helmet safety workshop and gave expert advice on safety practices for students engaged in sports. Students ages 12 and older received free sports physicals.

Peach State Health Plan personnel provided information on health and fitness benefits available to families and distributed backpacks and lunchboxes to attendees.
