Reps. Sandra Scott, Kim Schofield, Viola Davis Issue Statements on Ketanji Brown Jackson U.S. Senate Confirmation for Supreme Court

ATLANTA – State Representatives Sandra Scott (D-Rex), Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) and Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain) today issued the following statements regarding the U.S. Senate recently confirming Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black female justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court:

“Words cannot express how I am feeling right now,” said Rep. Scott. “I am grateful and thank God for allowing me to see the first Black woman appointed to the highest court in the land. My heart cried out as I reflected on this journey Ketanji Brown Jackson went through to become the first Black woman to sit on the highest court of the land. She was ridiculed, called unfit and unqualified to serve, but she never wavered. She stood her ground by standing for truth, justice and the pursuit of happiness. My mother and grandmothers would be proud, and I am excited for my grandson, granddaughter and all Black children because they see that they can open any door.”

“Yesterday was a historic moment in our nation for the confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to be seated on the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Rep. Schofield. “Qualified and capable, this appointment recognizes that a Black woman will not only have a seat at the table, but she will also have a strong voice. It is time for women of all races and ethnicities to be recognized, confirmed and appointed. Congratulations, Ketanji Brown Jackson, and congratulations, America.”

“The heavens have blessed us all with the bipartisan vote of 53-47 to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson,” said Rep. Davis. “I, along with my mother, family and friends, cried out with joy as we witnessed the historic confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court.
