Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones Urges Fulton County Board of Commissioners to Retain Current Millage Rate

ATLANTA – Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones (R-Milton), along with other Republican members of the Fulton County Legislative Delegation, yesterday issued a letter to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners opposing a proposed property tax increase for Fulton County.

“As legislators, but more importantly as citizens of Fulton County, we believe increasing the millage rate at this time would place yet another financial burden upon residents when high inflation is already negatively impacting them,” said Speaker Pro Tempore Jones. “We understand providing county services is an important responsibility. However, increasing the property tax rate by almost 13 percent and, thus, property tax revenue by $122 million hurts citizens. The increased property tax revenue comes at their personal expense.”

In the letter to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, Speaker Pro Tem Jones and other lawmakers cite existing financial burdens on constituents, as well as sustained and continued revenue growth in Fulton County in recent years as reasons they oppose a property tax increase. The letter also notates that as a result of Fulton’s recent revenue growth, the local the county’s tax digest has increased beyond population growth.

“In contrast, at the state level, we have returned a portion of hard-earned state tax dollars to citizens over the past two years,” added Pro Tem Jones. “It has benefited Georgians, and especially here in Fulton County. We respectfully request that the millage rate not be increased, relieving citizens of yet another financial burden during a time when our shared constituents can least afford it.”

Representative Jan Jones represents the citizens of District 47, which includes portions of Cherokee and Fulton counties. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2002 and currently serves as House Speaker Pro-Tempore.
