ATLANTA – State Representative Mesha Mainor (D-Atlanta) yesterday recognized the survivors of gun violence on the floor of the Georgia House of Representatives. In honor of National Gun Violence Survivors Week, Rep. Mainor recognized these survivors during a morning order.
“National Gun Violence Survivors Week is intended to raise awareness for common- sense gun safety measures that save lives,” said Rep. Mainor. “Survivors include caregivers for those wounded, those injured by guns, loved ones who lost someone from gun suicides, or those that witness gun violence who may be affected by a life-time of post-traumatic stress. Survivors suffer emotional, medical, financial and legal hardships for themselves and their communities. Every day, more than 100 people in the U.S. are killed with guns. And, by early February each year, more people are killed with guns in the U.S. than are killed with guns in other high-income countries in an entire year. 58 percent of American adults, including 68 percent of Black and Hispanic Americans, are survivors. This week everyone can increase the awareness of gun safety and advocate for survivors of gun violence by using the hashtag, ‘#GVSurvivorsWeek.’”
Rep. Mainor also encouraged her colleagues in the House to visit the “Moments That Survive” digital storytelling website, where Americans across the country share details of their experiences. The stories are shared by individuals who are affected by gun violence through homicides, suicides, domestic violence and stalking involving a gun, unintentional shootings and threats of being harmed by a gun.
During her morning order, Rep. Mainor also honored the life and memory of Brian Sicknick, who died as a result of injuries sustained during the recent attack at the U.S. Capitol.
“I also wanted to make sure that my colleagues and I took a moment to honor of Officer Brian Sicknick, who was killed senselessly at the U.S. Capitol, on the day his body was taken to the Arlington National Cemetery for his burial,” said Rep. Mainor.
