Rep. Houston Gaines Named Vice Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives’ Committee on Assignments named State Representative Houston Gaines (R-Athens) as the Vice Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education. Rep. Gaines will also serve as Secretary of the Health & Human Services Committee and as a member of the Special Committee on Election Integrity, Special Committee on Access to the Civil Justice System and the Juvenile Justice, Code Revision and Insurance committees.

“As the home of the state’s flagship institution, our area is impacted by higher education more than any other in the state,” said Rep. Gaines. “I am proud of what we delivered in our first term for our local colleges and universities, including the expansion of the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership in Athens and critical funding for UGA and Athens Technical College projects. I look forward to more success moving forward as we work together to focus on student-centered education. I’m excited and honored to serve in this new role and about the work ahead.”

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education assists with drafting budgets, specifically budgetary items related to higher education. The committee also hears legislation that influences the state revenue or expenditures regarding the University System of Georgia, universities, colleges, post-secondary education and student financial aid.

The House Committee on Assignments, chaired by House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge), is charged with making all House committee assignments for the members of the Georgia House of Representatives.
