Effingham Delegation to Introduce Legislation Amending Powers of Chairman at Large

ATLANTA— The Effingham County Legislative Delegation, comprised of State Representative Jon Burns (R-Newington),  State Representative Ann Purcell (R-Rincon), and State Senator Jack Hill (R-Reidsville), announced today plans to introduce local legislation that will alter the Chairman of the Effingham County Commission’s voting power and change this position’s ability to set meeting agendas for the county commission.

The proposed local legislation will be made up of two key elements.  The first would allow the Chairman at Large to only have a vote in case of a tie between voting members.  The second part of the legislation would allow two or more commission members to have an item added to the agenda for the following meeting.

As constitutionally required for local legislation, a newspaper advertisement for the proposed changes will run in the next edition of Effingham County’s legal organ, the Effingham Herald.

Members of the delegation said that the legislation is being introduced in response to public comment at a recent forum.  They also noted that no decision has been made at this point concerning a new referendum on the Chairman at Large position.
