Georgia House of Representatives Raises over $46 Thousand in Support of the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund

MARTA employees contribute $30,000 to the House Helping Haiti Event

ATLANTA- House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) today announced that the House Helping Haiti bi-partisan fundraising event raised a total of $46,302 to benefit the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.  The event took place on Thursday, February 11th at the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot and featured special guests Brian Finneran, Coy Wire and Ovie Mughelli from the Atlanta Falcons.

“This effort sends a strong message that some causes rise above party affiliation,” said Speaker Ralston.  “I am proud of the support this event received from the Georgia House of Representatives, the Atlanta Falcons and everyone else involved.”

Dr. Beverly Scott, General Manager and CEO of MARTA, was also on hand to present a $30,000 contribution from MARTA employees in support of the event.

“I appreciate the generosity of MARTA’s employees who supported the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, and were a part of the House Helping Haiti fundraiser,” added Speaker Ralston.

The House Helping Haiti event featured a video from Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, who discussed the importance of helping those affected by the earthquake. Dr. Ed Risler of the University of Georgia who recently returned from Haiti was present to share his stories of the recovery effort. In addition, individuals from Haiti who experienced the disaster first hand also addressed the attendees.

“I want to thank everyone who donated to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund,” said House Minority Leader Dubose Porter.  “The event was a huge success and a great example of what we can accomplish when we work together for a common goal.”

In addition to Speaker Ralston and Minority Leader Porter (D-Dublin), the host committee included the following members of caucus leadership in the Georgia House of Representatives: Speaker Pro-Tem Jan Jones (R-Milton), Majority Leader Jerry Keen (R-St. Simons), Majority Whip Edward Lindsey (R-Atlanta), Majority Caucus Chairwoman Donna Sheldon (R-Dacula), Majority Caucus Vice-Chairman Jeff May (R-Monroe), Majority Secretary/Treasurer Allen Peake (R-Macon), Minority Whip Carolyn Hugley (D-Columbus), Minority Caucus Chairman Calvin Smyre (D-Columbus), Minority Caucus Vice-Chairwoman Nikki Randall (D-Macon), Assistant Minority Whip Rob Teilhet (D-Smyrna), Minority Secretary Kathy Ashe (D-Atlanta), and Minority Treasurer Don Wix (D-Mableton).
