Local Female Athlete Recognized at Capitol

ATLANTA – Representative Stephanie Stuckey-Benfield (D – Atlanta) introduced House Resolution 225, recognizing February 4, 2009 as “Girls and Women Sports Day” and commending Georgia’s outstanding female athletes. Along with the resolution, Rep. Benfield was joined at the Capitol by several of the finalists for the Georgia Intersports Network Awards. Among those recognized was Anne Barr, Commissioner of the Decatur Women’s Sports League.

“These girls are not only athletes; they’re also leaders, and they deserve to be recognized for their outstanding performance,” said Rep. Benfield. “This day is about congratulating female athletes for a job well done, and inspiring athletic achievement in next generation.”

Anne Barr won the Georgia Intersports Network’s Ashe- Stuckey Leadership in Government Award. This award is named for Georgia state legislator Kathy Ashe and Stephanie Stuckey-Benfield. The award recognizes those individuals who use their elected or appointed offices to promote fairness and equality in athletic opportunity.
